Issues that are relatively minor inconveniences for most people can lead to devastating outcomes for families already burdened with the costs of meeting their basic needs. Catholic Urban Programs steps in with short-term solutions to help stabilize families in times of crisis. The HUB (Housing, Utilities, Basic Needs) is a centralized access point to CUP’s crisis intervention services.
Potential impacts of such crises include:
- Temporary loss of transportation for an under-resourced person can lead to job loss;
- Extreme temperatures can lead to higher than normal utility bills which, if unpaid, can lead to eviction;
- Medical conditions can lead to high prescription medication costs which can lead to difficult budgeting choices for low-income seniors and families.
CUP helps address the issue of food insecurity in our community through a monthly food box program. Qualifying families receive non-perishable items, and other essentials such as fresh meat, milk and eggs.
